Brands Hatch: 30th June 2001

Just one week following the AMOC meeting at Snetterton, we come to the former British Grand Prix Circuit at Brands Hatch.  Our late qualifying session meant that the normal crack of dawn start was not necessary, and we left Norfolk at 7.00 am and arrived at Brands at about 10am.

Practise - very pleased with a best time of 2:01.726 despite being Julians first visit to Brands and never getting the Dingle Dell chicane as he would have liked.   Other Fulvias in the 70's roadsports had clocked a best of 2:05.483 for a 1600 car (Jai Sharma) and 2:07.393 for a 1300 car (Louise Kennedy)

We lined up on the grid 18th out of 29th ahead of a number of class D cars (up to 2000cc).   We were still behind Peter Bornhauser's yellow Ginetta G15 and the Cottage Classics ( orange G15 driven by Michael Richings.   These cars have a 350kg weight advantage and run the very tunable Hillman Imp engine which we estimate gives 120bhp in HSCC trim..

Race:  The race was cut short after an incident filled race - a Triumph TR5 had a halfshaft failure and lost its front wheel (the same thing happened to a TVR in the 70's roadsports race - cars share the same part I understand), a TVR Vixen lost its oil out of Druids and a Chevrolet Camaro had come off the circuit.   The race was red flagged on the 6th lap, and with this being over half distance, positions were counted at the end of the previous lap.

Jullian felt he was held up in some areas of the circuit by Michael Richings Ginetta, and an Alfa Guilia Sprint managed to find his way past.  He felt that he would have been able to pass the Ginetta had the race run its full distance, but it wasn't to be.  We finished 15th overall.

He now has 5 signatures on his licence, but requires another 5 before that novices cross can come off soon!

Next Race: CastleCombe, 4th August.  See you there!
